Samsung Ultra HD Monitor Displays 1 Billion Colors

This is no April Fools joke, you did in fact read the title correctly. Samsung will be shipping their 28-inch 10-bit 4K Ultra HD monitor this month for $700 (UD590). Previously, you had to spend well over $1,000 to own a 10-bit 4K monitor. So what exactly is 10-bit you ask? Well, for us lay people, that’s 1 billion colors of glorious eye-candy. The UD590 is ideally suited to the budget-minded enthusiast who wants to be at the forefront of 4K gaming, or more likely, wishes to edit and produce 4K Ultra HD video. Samsung also recommends the monitor for sports and action film fans. While the panel has been available in South Korea for a couple months, Samsung is finally preparing to launch this beauty in the United States this month.

The Samsung UD590 features a 28-inch 3840×2160 TN panel at 157 PPI, 60Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort, and no DVI connectors. The 4K monitor also features a “picture-by-picture” function to allow the display of two desktops simultaneously, with no loss in resolution. Also featured is the classic “picture-in-picture” function, allowing viewers to watch a smaller 1080p window inside the larger window.

The UD590 Ultra HD monitor features a minimalist design with a simple T-stand to reduce the space it uses on your desk, leaving room for your speakers or other useless clutter.

Also in Samsung’s announcement, the Ultra HD monitor will feature 1.07 billion colors, 370 Nits of brightness, and a 10,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio — though no specific mention of picture quality was mentioned. Unfortunately, as with most TN (twisted nematic) screens, viewing angle and color fidelity is inferior to the more costly IPS (In-plane switching) screens. That being said, hopefully Samsung blows us away with the UD590’s touted 170-degree viewing angle; we’ll just have to wait and see.

Samsung is also offering a couple new Full HD (1080p) monitors this month as well, the SD390 and the SD590. Both will be available in 23.6- and 27-inch screen sizes. The SD390 will start at $250, and the SD590 at $310.
